Bears QB Caleb Williams Joins NFL Player Push for Grass Surfaces

The FIFA 2026 World Cup officially came to an end with Spain defeating Argentina, 1-0, in extra time at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With a winner crowned, the 11 NFL stadiums that hosted 78 matches throughout the tournament will return to its natural state. That means the grass that FIFA requested to be installed for the tournament will be removed.

MetLife and six of the 11 stadiums will return to artificial turf. With the World Cup coming to an end, various NFL players voiced their opinions about wanting grass playing surfaces over social media on Friday.

Bears backup quarterback Case Keenum was one of many players who also expressed his desire to move on from artificial turf fields.
"Let's play on grass!!! #WorstTheCost," Keenum wrote in a post on X.
It's a topic that has been constantly discussed and soccer players playing on natural grass in NFL stadiums has resurfaced the ongoing issue. At the beginning of the FIFA World Cup, the NFLPA released a statement on social media, highlighting that fields can incorporate natural grass, something that 92% of NFL players prefer, which was highlighted in the post.
The ongoing debate surrounding playing surfaces has resurfaced, fueled by soccer matches played on natural grass inside NFL stadiums. Before the start of the FIFA World Cup, the NFLPA released a social media statement emphasizing that these venues are fully capable of incorporating natural grass, the preferred playing surface by 92% of NFL players.
"The temporary installation of natural grass fields for the World Cup is a choice by certain NFL team owners to do for soccer players what they refuse to do for NFL players," the NFLPA said in a statement posted to social media five weeks ago. "It's no longer a question of capability; the technology exists, the expertise exists and the resources exist to install the high-level grass fields that our players overwhelmingly prefer.
"We have seen the meaningful investments made to meet the standard for international athletes and global events. NFL players -- who regularly compete on these fields help fund these stadiums and whose work makes the league what it is today -- deserve the same commitment to quality grass fields."
Of the 30 NFL stadiums, 15 of them use natural grass. Soldier Field is one of stadiums to incorporate grass, but will that natural playing surface be a part of the team's plan for a new domed stadium?
That's a question for down the road. FIFA did provide clarity on one topic, though. NFL stadiums can feature natural playing fields, but the league has to determine if a universal change is worth the cost.
