Spain coach expects Cucurella to keep his word, get tattoo of his face

If Spain defender Marc Cucurella is a man of his word, he will soon have some new and unusual ink on his body.

Before the 2026 World Cup started, Cucurella promised that if Spain won the tournament, he would get a "small" tattoo of his coach's face.

The bill is about to come due.

Spain claimed the World Cup title on Sunday, July 19, defeating Lionel Messi and Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Cucurella played all 120 minutes of the win, which clinched Spain's second World Cup and first since 2010.

After the game, Luis De la Fuente was asked about the left back's promise. The coach made it clear that he was expecting Cucurella to keep his word.

"I am too old for tattoos but my players are men of their word and I know they will stick to their word," De la Fuente told a press conference. "They ‌made ⁠a mistake, and they will stick to it. I am not that ugly."

Asked which part of Cucurella's body he would like to see his face on, the coach said: "Maybe a part of the body where it is not visible. ⁠But when you say something you have to stick to their word."

This wouldn't be the first time Cucurella has made – and kept – a bold promise after winning a major competition.

Cucurella said he would dye his trademark long hair red if Spain won Euro 2024. After La Roja did just that, Cucurella kept his word.
