Sophie Cunningham has never been afraid to laugh at herself, and the Indiana Fever guard delivered another memorable social media moment after noticing an unfortunate detail in one of the team’s promotional photos.

Indiana used an action shot of Cunningham to promote Wednesday’s home game against the Connecticut Sun, the Fever’s final contest before the WNBA All-Star break. The photo appeared innocent enough, showing Cunningham attacking the basket for a layup. There was only one problem: Cunningham remembered exactly what happened next.

“I believe I smoked the heck out of this layup,” Cunningham wrote in the comments. “Hahaha oops.”

The Fever apparently had plenty of photos from which to choose, but Cunningham found it hilarious that the social media team settled on an image documenting a shot she did not make.

According to Athlon Sports, Indiana shared the Cunningham graphic Monday alongside the caption, “last one before the All-Star break.” Cunningham’s admission quickly transformed a standard game promotion into something much more entertaining. It also provided another example of the veteran guard’s willingness to show her personality online.

Most players might have allowed everyone to assume the layup dropped through the net. Cunningham instead volunteered the truth and called attention to a missed shot that probably would have otherwise been forgotten. Fortunately for the Fever, Cunningham has made far more important shots than she has missed this season.

The 29-year-old entered Wednesday averaging 9.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Her greatest impact has come from the perimeter, where she has developed into one of the WNBA’s most dependable shooters. Cunningham was connecting on 43.7 percent of her 3-point attempts, the second-best mark in the league. She was making 1.8 triples per game on 4.1 attempts.

Those numbers make it much easier to forgive one smoked layup.

Cunningham has become an important part of Fever’s success

Cunningham demonstrated her shooting value during Indiana’s 108-88 victory over the New York Liberty on Saturday. She scored 11 points and knocked down three of her four attempts from beyond the arc as the Fever rolled past one of the league’s most dangerous teams. That performance came less than a week after Cunningham produced one of her best games of the season against the Las Vegas Aces. She poured in 20 points during Indiana’s 109-75 victory on July 12, making six of her seven 3-point attempts.

Cunningham’s floor spacing has given Indiana another dangerous option alongside Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. Defenders cannot afford to leave her unattended on the perimeter, especially when she is shooting with this much confidence. Her intensity has also made her a natural fit with a Fever team attempting to establish itself as a legitimate championship contender. Cunningham brings experience, toughness and a willingness to embrace whatever role Indiana needs from her.

She apparently also brings a very good memory for missed layups.

The Fever will host the Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse before the league pauses for the All-Star break. If Cunningham gets another opportunity near the basket, she will have a chance to produce a much better photo for Indiana’s next promotional graphic.
