49ers GM gives positive update on Kyle Shanahan after car accident

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch on Saturday had some additional details about head coach Kyle Shanahan's immediate future after Shanahan suffered significant injuries in a car accident in Northern California on July 14.

Shanahan sustained a broken hand, broken ribs, a concussion and required 40 stitches to his face according to a report from ESPN. He's not expected to execute his full duties as head coach early in training camp, but Lynch told reporters in a press conference Saturday that the club isn't expecting Shanahan to miss any time in the regular season.
Offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take over some of the head coaching duties according to a statement from the team. Lynch said that didn't mean Shanahan would be fully absent from the field. Shanahan is expected to be on the field for training camp practices, but not unlike a player with a concussion, he won't address media or the team until he clears concussion protocol. Lynch said the club will be letting doctors determine when Shanahan is good to return to the sidelines in a full capacity.
The GM also expressed optimism about the club's ability to overcome this atypical obstacle.
"We feel like we're well-equipped for something like this," Lynch said. "We understand what a tremendous leader we have in Kyle. But like, Chris Foerster has been in the NFL for 24 seasons, 13 of those with Kyle, knows Kyle inside and out, what Kyle wants, what Kyle needs. We've got guys like Klay Kubiak. Raheem Morris who has head coach experience. Brant Boyer, the list goes on and on."
The 49ers lean heavily on the culture they've built under Shanahan and Lynch, and now they'll need that culture more than ever as they navigate uncertain waters with their head coach unable to fully participate in the first part of training camp. The real questions will arise if Shanahan is unable to coach to start the regular season, although it doesn't sound like that issue is one the team is concerned about just yet.
