ESPN executive says not mixing sports with politics is not realistic

The mixture of sports with politics has been a major topic of conversation this summer, with several incidents of sports and politics crossing the line in the last few months.

One such incident occurred earlier this year, when New York Giants quarterback Jaxon Dart introduced Donald Trump at a political event, which rubbed some of his teammates the wrong way.
Giants defensive end Abdul Carter called out Dart on social media about him appearing with Trump. The pair apparently cleared the air about the incident, but it just shows how politics and sports can easily mix, whether we want it to or not.
ESPN's EVP, David Roberts, says those who think sports and politics shouldn't mix aren't being realistic.
Roberts spoke on this week's Higher Learning podcast about sports and politics.
“It’s a problem when you have executives who want to fall behind the ‘well this is sports’ mentality,” he said. “And that’s just never been me, because that’s not reality.”
It seems ESPN, of late, wants to move more away from the two mixing.
“I was always unafraid to challenge within the organization that especially nothing drove me crazier than, ‘Well, you know, we don’t mix politics with sports, and covering issues like that is crossing the boundary of politics into sports,'” he said.
The new regime at ESPN wants hosts to steer clear of controversial subjects unless they have a connection to the sports world.
“I think the edict is to make sure that there is a connection to sports,” Roberts concluded.
