Rassie: Method to the ‘madness’ of releasing Embrose Papier

Earlier this month, Embrose Papier was perhaps the most surprising inclusion among the five players who were released to their franchises to face the All Blacks in the midweek matches of the inaugural Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) series.
Papier was undoubtedly the most in-form South African scrumhalf during the URC season, and his performances were enough for him to force his way back into the Springbok team.

The 29-year-old featured against Scotland on 11 July, ending an eight-year absence from the Test arena, but with so much competition in the scrumhalf position, he has again been released from the team camp.
Embrose Papier hoping to get important game-time at the Bulls
During a press conference this week, Rassie Erasmus explained that there was actually a better chance for Papier to work his way back to the Springboks if he could get a chance to play for the Bulls against the All Blacks, especially at a time when they want to give Morne van den Berg some game-time after recovering from injury.
“There are a few players who we released to the franchises, a guy like Embrose is a classic example,” Erasmus said.
“We have to get game time into Krappie (Morné van den Berg) and Cobus (Reinach), so the two of them will go (to Argentina for the one-off Test on 8 August), if there isn’t an injury.
“If we take Embrose with them, he doesn’t have the opportunity to train with the Bulls ahead of their match against the All Blacks (on 15 August).
“Herschel (Jantjies) doesn’t have any club commitments now, that’s why he will go with.”
Boks will have to hope Bulls play ball
What may throw a curve ball into the mix is that Bulls coach Johan Ackermann suggested he would need to carefully consider if it made sense for Papier to face the All Blacks.
“Embrose is going to need a proper opportunity to rest at some stage,” he told Netwerk24.
“We’ll probably only know in the week before the match whether any of our other Springboks will be released to play against the All Blacks.”

Ruben van Heerden (lock), who made his Test debut against Wales last Saturday, is the only player in the squad for the opening leg of the Nations Championship who was omitted from the two groups after making the move from the Stormers to Montpellier, as he finds his feet with his new French club. He will, however, remain on standby for the team.
