According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, the 22-year-old has begun a swinging progression as he works his way back from a torn ligament in his right ring finger suffered on May 4 in the Red Sox's win over the Detroit Tigers.

According to Brown, Anthony has begun hitting balls off a tee and taking soft tosses. The plan is for him to take 30 swings per day as he progresses until the next step.

The return to swinging marks the first time the 22-year-old has made tangible progress in his request to return from the injury since he was shut down on May 18 after still feeling pain in the finger as he began tee work.

Anthony's injury has been one of the stranger developments during the Red Sox' 2026 season. After initially thinking the former No. 1 prospect in the sport would need only a couple of days of rest before returning to the lineup, the team made the decision to place him on the 10-day injured list for what was expected to be a minimum stay.

After being shut down from swinging after the setback, there was miscommunication between the team and player about the nature of the injury, with team president Sam Kennedy pushing back on a report that the injury was a tear, rather than a sprain, telling WEEI's The Greg Hill Show there was "no evidence of a tear." Only for Anthony himself to tell WEEI's Rob Bradford that the injury was indeed a tear.

As Anthony struggled to take steps in his quest to return from the injury, and injuries began to mount in Boston, the Red Sox made the decision to send the 22-year-old to the team’s spring training facilities in Ft. Myers, where he would wait to be pain-free before resuming a hitting progression. His resumption of swinging a bat seems to be a clear signal that he is no longer feeling pain in the finger.

He still likely has a long road ahead, which likely includes a lengthy minor league rehab stint, but the budding star getting healthy is a welcome sign for a Red Sox team that is hitting its stride at the exact right time heading into the homestretch of the season.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, newly acquired infielder Curtis Mead has a non-displaced fracture in his wrist and will not require surgery. He will be reevaluated in four weeks to check in on the healing, at which point the team will have a better idea of whether ot not the 25-year-old can return to the lineup in 2026.

Up next for the Sox

The Red Sox will look to make it seven consecutive series wins on Thursday night in the finale of a four-game set against the Athletics from Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Sonny Gray (12-2, 2.78 ERA) will get the start for the Sox opposite Mason Barnett (1-1, 4.74) for the A's. First pitch set for 9:40 p.m. ET.
