FOREVER FRIEND: This puppy is Cute as a Button – no, really, that's his name

A nine-month-old, mixed breed, male puppy named Cute as a Button is ready for his forever home while he awaits adoption at the Toronto Humane Society.
“Our team can get fairly creative with names,” THS spokesperson Lucas Solowey joked.
“They had a hand with coming up with (the 17 names) for the Taylor Swift cats (up for adoption when the pop star was in Toronto in 2024) and a few campaigns. There have been many pets that are cute as a button but none with the name as far as I know.”
Cute as a Button came to THS as part of a transfer of 13 dogs from another shelters at the end of June.
“We’ve actually been transferring some more animals recently from some overcrowded shelters in some regions, so from a few different locations,” Solowey said.
“Some of them were from Northern Ontario where they’ve been experiencing wildfires as well. I don’t know exactly which shelter he came from.”
Puppy part of THS Pledge for Paws campaign
Cute as a Button is actually part of the THS’ Pledge for Paws campaign whose donations help brings in animals from other overcrowded shelters to Toronto.
“So that’s going on right now,” Solowey said. “And people will have a chance to meet some of the animals that are part the Pledge for Paws campaign at our our Paws in The Park event presented by Amazon on Aug. 15 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (at THS at 11 River St. in Toronto). And we’ll have a mega adoption event.”
Otherwise, Cute as a Button is what you’d expect a puppy to be like.
“He’s energetic,” Solowey said. “He’s affectionate. He’s fun-loving. He does love to explore, play, stay active. So he would be a great companion for someone who enjoys spending time outdoors and is bit more active. He can sometimes be over-excited or distracted by things happening around him, which is pretty normal puppy behaviour. He’s eager to learn and responds well to guidance. He’s already demonstrated strong focus during training and enjoys working alongside people. So he has good behaviour, he has good skills, and I think those will only continue to keep improving as more training goes.”
And, as you would expect with any puppy, he likes “playing fetch, running, going after balls, enjoys treats.”
Solowey wasn’t sure how Cute as a Button is around other dogs or small children but suggested an introduction at the shelter.
“He seems to be sweet and playful and so I don’t anticipate issues, but it’s always good to double-check. I think he’d make a great pet in almost any family.”
