K-pop group BTS boycotts 2027 Grammys over new Asian category

K-pop group BTS is boycotting the 69th Annual Grammy Awards by not submitting their music for consideration for the February 2027 ceremony.

The group made the announcement on their Instagram, seemingly referencing the reason for the boycott as the addition of a new category: Best Asian Pop Music Performance.
“We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language,” reports Euro News.
Euro News went on to say that in response, Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. said the new category was added because of “our music community sharing with us that they felt they needed to have more opportunities to celebrate different and new genres of music.”
BTS, who have released 27 official albums in total, are top of the K-Pop game, having sold over 161.7 million equivalent albums, and have over 2.3 billion streams of their signature song Dynamite on Spotify to date, as well as over 2.1 billion views on YouTube.
