City warns of fake ticket scams after offering free ferry rides to Toronto Islands

The City of Toronto is warning about fake ticket scams targeting people interested in visiting the Toronto Islands.

The notice was issued on Sunday morning on social media and advised users that all city websites include “toronto.ca.
“Scam alert,” the notice said. “We’ve received reports of fraudulent websites claiming to be the City of Toronto and selling fake ferry tickets. These websites are a scam, only purchase ferry tickets from http://toronto.ca/ferry .”

The notice came three days after Mayor Olivia Chow and Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik spearheaded a motion in council — called “Celebrating the Win: Free August Ferry Rides for Kids and Seniors” — to make Toronto Island ferry tickets free for people under the age of 20 as well as anyone over 64 years of age.

Free tickets offered after airport expansion blocked
The motion, which passed by a vote of 15-5 with six councillors absent, was in response to the federal government blocking the Billy Bishop Airport expansion , which was being sought by the provincial government and had caused a rift with some municipal politicians and advocacy groups.
Their motion said it was in “recognition of the tens of thousands of Torontonians who made their voices heard and to show more people why the Toronto Islands are so special.”
“We know the waterfront belongs to the people and thousands and thousands of them spoke up about the importance of stopping the airport expansion,” Chow told reporters at City Hall on Thursday, via CityNews. “These residents are from across Toronto … and today Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik and I want to … thank them for their hard work and their love of our waterfront.”
Despite the tickets being free for some, they still need to be obtained through the city’s official ticketing website. The website can be accessed through a direct link on the City of Toronto website under “Toronto Islands and Ferries.”
