Cowboys defense may work best in hands of multiple green-dot options

In an ideal world, the Dallas Cowboys would roll into the 2026 NFL season with a clear hierarchy of established veterans leading their defense. They’d have a culture of accountability in place, a proven grasp of the defensive system on display, and a seasoned on-field play caller to lead Christian Parker’s unit into battle.

But the NFL isn’t ideal and the Cowboys defense is far from being proven, stable, or well captained. Parker, Dallas’ first year defensive coordinator, is in the process of flipping a historically bad defense into something that could compete for a Super Bowl. He’s doing so without an established culture of accountability or without proven on-field command from the player ranks.
Finding an on-field communicator is an important task this summer in Oxnard. Since only one player on the field at a time is allowed to receive radio communication with the coaching staff, the NFL identifies this player with a green dot. To be the green dot, a player must have a firm and confident understanding of the defense. Teammates look to him for guidance and the radio can only take that player so far.
Look no further than a recent experiment Parker conducted on DeMarvion Overshown.

Testing the waters, Parker faked a radio outage to see how his green dot of the day would handle things. It turns out, Overshown rose to the occasion and handled the situation splendidly.
One might think the Cowboys have found their man; that Overshown is a perfect green dot and all efforts should be made into grooming him for the regular season. One might be wrong.
Parker has been passing the green dot around like hot sauce at a BBQ. In the first couple days alone as many as four different players wore the green dot for Dallas, and frankly, that’s just smart business.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said in addition to DeMarvion Overshown wearing the green dot, rookie Caleb Downs, Shemar James and Curtis Robinson are also wearing the green dot.

Linebacker is a physical position and Overshown’s track record for health is concerning at best. Parker’s wise to vet multiple players with the green dot because at some point, they’ll probably be needed.
It serves the Cowboys well to have multiple players test the green dot from time to time. Not only is it a contingency plan but it gives ownership and adds a level of responsibility to all who wear it. Goodness knows the Cowboys need more of that on defense.
Parker isn’t gatekeeping his green dot because it behooves him and his entire defense to have as many smart and responsible players as possible on his unit. Like Oprah to her studio audience, Parker’s happy to say, “you get a green dot, and you get a green dot, and you get a green dot!"
The 2026 Cowboys defense needs more than one man on the field stepping up to a leadership role. The Cowboys need a complete culture shift with multiple players taking ownership, multiple players capable of leadership, and a whole team dedicated to accountability.
