What the Data Actually Shows

Heart rate is the clearest evidence. A 2023 study published in Science and Sports fitted a competing driver with real-time monitoring and recorded an average of 146±25 beats per minute across a race, around 73 percent of the driver’s maximum, with sustained readings of 148 to 163bpm through the racing phases and a peak of 173bpm at the start. At points, that meant the driver was working at up to 92 percent of their maximum heart rate, a workload that would be considered a serious cardiovascular effort in almost any endurance sport.
The physical loads are just as extreme. Braking a Formula 1 car takes up to 160kg of pedal pressure, applied as many as 1,200 times across a race distance, and former driver David Coulthard has described the sensation bluntly: “when you brake at the end of a straight, it feels like a sledgehammer has hit your back.” Under the 2026 technical regulations, cars are lighter and produce meaningfully less downforce than before, so the G-forces drivers experience through a lap have actually come down, typically 2 to 3G, with the hardest braking zones over 2G. That is still a lot to absorb through the neck and core for close to two hours, and it is a long way down from the peaks of the previous generation of cars: Lewis Hamilton was recorded pulling 5.6G through Turn 7 at Mugello in 2020.
Then there is the heat. Cockpit temperatures can reach around 50 degrees Celsius, and drivers routinely lose 2 to 4kg of fluid, up to 5 percent of their body weight, over a single race while burning in the order of 1,500 calories. A 6kg-plus helmet adds constant load to the neck throughout, on top of everything else.
How Drivers Actually Train
None of that happens by accident. Antti Kontsas, Sebastian Vettel’s former trainer, has explained why neck conditioning specifically gets so much attention: “The real reason why the neck is so important is that you need to see where you’re going. It’s all about precision.” Lando Norris’s trainer, John Malvern, has said Norris does dedicated neck work “at least five times a week,” and Norris himself has been candid about how brutal the testing side of the job is. After one assessment day he admitted, “I don’t feel great, I’m pretty dead,” and called the process “probably the worst day of the year.”
The mental side gets just as much attention as the physical side. Aleix Casanovas, George Russell’s performance coach, has made the point that knowing when to switch off carries just as much weight as the training itself: “This is the main thing about why we’re here in F1 during the weekends: to remind these guys to switch off. Knowing when to rest is as important as knowing when to push.” That balance, between relentless physical preparation and deliberate recovery, is the same approach used across most modern elite sport.
What Separates Champions From the Rest
Being fit enough to finish a Grand Prix is one thing. Winning championships is another, and the gap between the two tends to come down to a handful of qualities that are harder to train than raw fitness.
Mental resilience is usually cited first. Fernando Alonso’s reputation as one of the toughest competitors of his generation was built over two world titles and two decades of racing, and it shows up in how rarely he is rattled by a bad session or a bad strategy call. Charles Leclerc is the clearest current example of the opposite side of that coin: a driver with the outright speed to win a championship who, through the end of the 2025 season, still hadn’t done it, a reminder that raw pace alone does not decide titles.
Adaptability counts for just as much. Jenson Button’s win from 21st on the grid at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, in changing rain and after a drive-through penalty, remains one of the sport’s benchmark examples of a driver adjusting his whole approach to the conditions in front of him rather than the plan he started with.
And precision under fatigue is what separates a driver who can go fast for one lap from one who can go fast, cleanly, for 300km.
