The Miami Heat were one of the few teams that went all in on their pursuit of LeBron James this offseason. Miami made a strong push to convince James to join the organization, but it was a slow process as he took nearly a month to make a decision that would have a lasting impact on the final years of his career.

The Heat believed they were firmly in the race for James. Miami president Pat Riley even addressed the team’s pursuit of the superstar forward.

“To be transparent about it, we've had discussions over a week ago, maybe a week before that about it. But right now, I think we're like everybody else. Just waiting to see what he does," Riley told the media.

Miami was hoping for a reunion with James, who won two championships with the organization during his first stint with the franchise in the 2010s. This time, the Heat envisioned a new Big Three featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, and James. However, James ultimately decided to finish his career with the Philadelphia 76ers.

“LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin wrote. “James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania.”

Miami felt like it was close to landing James, and the organization had reason to believe it was in serious contention. Adebayo was recently asked about James choosing Philadelphia over Miami and gave an honest response.

“I’m cool with Bron. I consider Bron like a brother honestly. We’ve been Olympic teammates but even before that we’ve always had down to earth conversations. I’m happy for him. You want what’s best for somebody. That’s really how you go from there,” Adebayo said.

Of course, Adebayo gave the respectful response expected from a player in that situation, but there is likely still a part of him that would have enjoyed the opportunity to team up with James. Instead, James will now be competing against Miami as an Eastern Conference opponent.

James returning to South Beach would have been a major move, but he ultimately wanted a new challenge to close out his legendary career. Adebayo and James appear to have no hard feelings toward one another, as this was simply a business decision.
