Mumbai Infra Update: Vidyavihar Flyover Nears Completion, Likely To Open After September 8 Following Safety Tests

Mumbai, August 6, 2026: The long-awaited Vidyavihar flyover project has entered its final phase, with most construction work completed and only the concrete casting of two spans remaining.

The pending work is expected to be completed by August 31, following which the BMC will conduct load testing and other mandatory technical safety checks.

The flyover will be opened to vehicular traffic only after successfully clearing all safety assessments and is likely to become operational after September 8, civic officials said.

Final Construction Phase

The connector links Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg in the east with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the west and includes a 100-metre stretch over the railway tracks. The bridge will also provide direct access to the footpaths of Vidyavihar railway station, improving connectivity for pedestrians.

“Barring the concrete casting of two spans, most of the work has been completed. After completion, load testing and technical safety checks will be carried out before opening the flyover for traffic,” said a senior official from the BMC’s Bridges Department.

Road Widening Underway

To prevent congestion after the flyover becomes operational, the BMC has started widening the approach roads on both sides of the bridge. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar reviewed the progress and directed officials to address bottlenecks, affected establishments, footpaths and tree-related issues.

A dedicated traffic management plan is also being prepared in coordination with the traffic police to ensure smooth movement during peak hours.

Project Delayed, Costs Rise

The project, first proposed in 1991, gained momentum in 2016, with construction beginning in 2018. Originally scheduled for completion by mid-2022, the project faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and design modifications. AB Infrabuild Limited was awarded the work order in February 2024. After multiple deadline extensions, the project cost escalated to Rs 178.93 crore.

Travel Time To Reduce

Once operational, the flyover is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Vidyavihar East and West, cutting peak-hour journeys from 40-45 minutes to around 10-15 minutes.

Built over the Central Railway tracks, the 612-metre-long, four-lane structure features a 100-metre-long railway span, among the longest girders over railway tracks in Mumbai. Each girder weighs around 1,100 metric tonnes.
