WNBA Official Changes Verdict on a Play Involving Angel Reese During Her Historic Night vs Phoenix Mercury

The Atlanta Dream and Phoenix Mercury locked horns in one of this week’s most anticipated matchups after Kelsey Plum joined Phoenix midseason. But even with an offensive force like Plum on their roster, the Dream entered the game as the fan favorites. And in 40 minutes, they proved exactly why by cruising to a 96-82 win. However, while Atlanta celebrated its 19th victory of the season, the game also served as a reminder of just how careful the Dream need to be with Angel Reese and her foul trouble.

According to sports reporter Wilton C. Jackson II, Reese was assessed a flagrant foul before officials took another look at the play.
“Officials take a look on what was called a flagrant foul on Angel Reese. But it was ruled a common foul,” Jackson wrote onX.
Although the call was downgraded to a common foul, it still reminded everyone just how close Reese is to a one-game suspension. The Dream star already has two Flagrant 1 fouls this season, one of which came against the Phoenix Mercury on May 24 and the other one against the Indiana Fever on June 20. So had the latest call stood, she would have moved one step closer to an automatic suspension.
Under the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, each Flagrant 1 foul is worth one point, while a Flagrant 2 carries two points. Each point also results in a $500 fine, and once a player accumulates four points, they receive an automatic one-game suspension.
Still, the overturned call doesn’t mean Angel Reese is out of danger. If not in the flagrant foul category, Reese is also just one step away from a suspension because of technical fouls.
Sharing the league lead with her arch-rival Caitlin Clark, Reese has already picked up seven techs so far. That means if she receives just one more, she would be fined $1,500 and automatically suspended for one game.
However, this game wasn’t just about what the Dream have to worry about. After the game came to an end, Angel Reese also became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 70 career double-doubles, according to Polymarket Hoops.
In 32 minutes on the floor, Reese finished the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Atlanta to the victory. The Dream now have 14 regular-season games remaining before the playoffs begin. Normally, that wouldn’t leave much room for error. But with Reese sitting just one foul away from a suspension in two different categories, Atlanta will have to be especially careful managing her physical style of play.
But again, Angel Reese has a game style that is built around dominating the paint. So keeping her away from a suspension for the remainder of the regular season could prove easier said than done.
