Lakers Could Add Klay Thompson Following Latest Update

Former Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson has long been connected to the Lakers, but in the twilight of his career, it seems more possible than ever that he could join LA.

Thompson has a natural connection to the Lakers, being the son of Mychal Thompson, a longtime Laker and true fan favorite.

Klay was a mainstay with the Warriors for a very long time, and even when he hit free agency, he chose to sign with the Mavericks rather than join the Lakers, passing up a real chance to join LA.

Recently, Mychal shared that he is “trying” to get Klay to sign with the Lakers, joining Doncic in LA this time and serving as a shooter on the wing.

While Klay is not currently a free agent, he is under contract for one more year, earning $17.4 million. There are rumors of a possible buyout or trade away from the Mavericks, looking to help a team on a contender.

After talk of a buyout, the Mavs reportedly want to instead work out a trade to avoid paying part of Thompson’s salary and possibly get any kind of assets.

Can Klay Thompson help the Lakers?

Thompson, a three-point shooting specialist, has gone through knee and leg injuries that have sapped a good part of his athleticism.

His play was so poor upon his comeback that the Warriors and Thompson made the call to move on.

The Dallas Mavericks, looking to get over the hump in the postseason with Luka Doncic, decided to pursue Thompson and signed him to a big free-agent contract.

However, things changed quickly for the Mavs; they ended up trading Doncic and going through a full rebuild, and they are now led by second-year player Cooper Flagg.

With the Mavs, Thompson has still shot the ball well, though his points have been on a decline, along with his field goal attempts per game.

Last year, he played 69 games, started only eight games, and put up 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.

Thompson, one of the greatest shooters of all time, shot 39.1% in 2024 and 38.3% last year from deep.

The Lakers need help on the wings, and a change of scenery, alongside an established role on a competitor, could be what Thompson needs to get his career going again.

At 36 and with so many surgeries, he may not have much juice left, but if he does, the Lakers could use him.

LA may be more willing to sign him following a buyout rather than trade for him, but they will likely be inquiring to see how viable adding Thompson is.
