‘You have to stop’: Emmanuel Acho rips Caitlin Clark for role in loss

The Indiana Fever lost its second consecutive game to a title contender on Thursday night after falling in overtime to the Las Vegas Aces. Unfortunately for the Fever faithful, the Fever snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, as superstar Caitlin Clark came up short multiple times with a chance to seal the win.

In a contest plagued by massive struggles with shooting efficiency and turnovers from Clark, both things proved costly. She missed two free throws in the final seconds of regulation that would’ve given Indiana a two-possession lead, which allowed Chelsea Gray’s buzzer-beating three-pointer to force overtime, and in the final seconds of overtime turned the ball over, which led to a Chelsea Gray buzzer-beating three-pointer to win the game.
“Heavy is the head”
After the game, sports analyst Emmanuel did not mince words for Clark.
“Heavy is the head, Caitlin, that wears the crown or the tiara, whatever you want to wear, and your head is heavy on today,” Acho said on Speakeasy. “Eight turnovers, and you, Caitlin Clark, said at halftime that you have to stop turning the ball over.
“If people are going to consider you the face of the WNBA, then I’m going to address you as such. What you cannot do in a must-win game when up by 3 with a matter of seconds left is miss 2 pivotal free throws. What you cannot do, Caitlin Clark, on the last possession of the game on offense when you already have seven turnovers going into that game and your next closest offensive player that has a dominant amount of points, and Kelsey Mitchell only has two turnovers.

“What you cannot do is turn the ball over. And in the event you do turn the ball over, Caitlin Clark— because a turnover may be a matter of mistake, but effort, that’s something you can control. And Caitlin Clark, last possession, Chelsea Gray, that shot could have been blocked if you would have sprinted your butt back there and made an effort. But you didn’t. You flailed.
“Attempted to draw a foul, and as a result, Chelsea Gray, splash, bucket, Aces win.”
Acho isn’t wrong in his criticisms of the young Fever guard, but it’s not anything she isn’t already acutely aware of. She took full responsibilty for how things played out in her post-game presser.
“Cost my team the game”
“Obviously, that just can’t happen. Those are free throws I usually make. Certainly frustrating,” she said. “Obviously, one of them gives us a two-possession lead. Kind of cost my team there for sure, so that’s on me.”
Clark didn’t shy away from the fact that she didn’t meet the moment.
“We put ourselves in a position to win the game, and honestly it was me who made costly errors for us,” Clark admitted. “It’s on me to help us win. That’s my job; that’s what I get paid to do.”
