Brian Schottenheimer Delivers Pivotal Injury Update on Cowboys Rookie

While things have been pretty smooth for the Dallas Cowboys at training camp so far, one of their top rookies is dealing with an injury.
Rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham left practice early on Thursday, as he was seen going to the medical tent. Barham did not return to that practice.

After a day off, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave the media an update on Barham. He will not practice on Saturday, but Barham’s injury is not considered serious. Schottenheimer also said that safety Jalen Thompson will be back practicing after dealing with a hip injury.

Cowboys Rookie Jaishawn Barham Not Practicing at Training Camp

The Cowboys selected Barham in the third round in the 2026 NFL Draft. He is expected to come in and potentially be a rotational player in his rookie season.
Last year at Michigan, he racked up 32 tackles, 4 pass deflections, 4 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. He was also a freshman All-American at Maryland before joining the Wolverines.
Barham has received early praise from Schottenheimer during the first week of training camp for showing off his versatility. In college, Barham was a linebacker before moving over to edge rusher in 2025. He looks to be taking reps with the linebackers in training camp.
Dallas also used their first two picks in the opening round of the draft on defense. The Cowboys selected safety Caleb Downs and edge rusher Malachi Lawrence before taking Barham.

At some point, Barham will be back on the practice field, which is a good thing. The injury doesn’t sound serious, so he will be able to come back soon enough.
What’s tough about the situation is that Barham had a lot of momentum building in his direction through the first week of training camp. Now he is facing a setback by missing out on reps.
DeMarvion Overshown and Dee Winters are expected to be the starters at inside linebacker. Barham is competing with Shemar James, Justin Barron, Curtis Robinson, and Langston Patterson for playing time.
It will be no surprise if Barham is listed as a backup when the season begins, but missing time for injury won’t help his chances to potentially start. This will only lead to him having to settle for a role outside of the defense.
Watch for Barham to play a big role in special teams depending on how things work out. Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker still has to figure out how he wants to handle the rotation at linebacker.
Regardless of how they handle things, Barham is going to be a factor in this defense in the future. Once he’s back on the field, he’ll have a chance to get that momentum back from the beginning of training camp.
