Tory support slips as Liberals pull ahead: poll

OTTAWA — The Mark Carney Liberals appear to be widening their lead over the Pierre Poilievre Tories, according to recent polling.

Released Monday, the results of Liaison Strategies’ weekly federal tracker poll show the Liberals 13 points ahead of the opposition Conservatives — up four points since last week and the biggest lead they’ve seen since the spring.
“This is the first real movement we have seen in the federal topline in a few weeks,” said Liaison’s David Valentin.
“The Liberals are up one point to 44%, the Conservatives are down three points to 31%, and the NDP is up one point to 13%. That moves the Liberal lead from 9 points last week to 13 points this week.”
A 13-point lead is far from unheard of, he explained, but noted it’s the Liberals’ biggest lead since March, following weeks where the gap hovered in the six to nine-point range.
“This week’s result puts the Liberals back into a much more comfortable position,” Valentin added.
Poilievre approval rating continues slide
The NDP remains in a distant third among decided voters with 13%, followed by the Bloc Quebecois at six per cent, the Green Party with three per cent, and the People’s Party of Canada only pulling two per cent support.
Valentin also pointed out the 13% undecided vote, saying the Tories’ drop isn’t solely voters transferring support from one party to another.
“Some of it is moving out of the decided column into the undecided column,” he said.
“It is worth noting that this week’s movement reflects the rolling nature of the tracker — a stronger Conservative week rolled out of the sample and was replaced by a stronger Liberal week. Whatever happens next week, this latest half-sample will remain in the tracker for one more week.”
Approval ratings for each leader remains consistent — Carney garnered a 57% approval rating and 33% disapproval rating, while 34% Poilievre’s favourability rating represents a year-long low for the Tory leader, compared to 53% disapproval.
“His favourable number is tied for its lowest point in this tracker, and his unfavourable number is the highest we have seen since March,” Valentin said.
“That matters because the Conservative vote is moving down at the same time his personal numbers remain weak.”
