Cemetery scandal: Residents call for action over alleged indecent acts

· The South African

Residents in the Verulam Central Business District (CBD), KwaZulu-Natal, have raised concerns about individuals allegedly engaging in indecent acts at the Wick Street Local Cemetery.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said it received multiple complaints about men allegedly visiting the cemetery during the day and evening, where they reportedly masturbated while watching pornographic videos.

Complaints about indecent acts started in January

Residents said the incidents have been happening since January 2026, with different men allegedly returning to the cemetery regularly.

They claimed some of the individuals were seen standing on or lying on graves and tombstones while engaging in the alleged acts.

Residents living near the cemetery also reported that children in nearby residential complexes could hear audio from the videos.

Security company calls for assistance

Project 360, a local security and cleaning company, contacted RUSA on Monday morning after receiving repeated complaints from residents of a nearby block of flats.

Residents said they have seen up to four different men allegedly carrying out the acts almost daily.

Municipal workers and members of the public have reportedly tried to remove the individuals from the cemetery.

Residents claim they return and continue their activities, sometimes in full view of the public.

RUSA to monitor cemetery

RUSA said the individuals involved are reportedly from different backgrounds and have been visiting the cemetery at various times throughout the day and evening.

The organisation’s drone pilot will regularly patrol the cemetery, while reaction officers will respond when necessary.
