In an online post, Trudeau dances to the song and mouths the lyrics while holding a plunger as the camera pans to Perry wearing a hat and sunglasses bobbing to the beat.
Hello! Canada posted the clip with the caption, “Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry couldn’t resist a little aisle dancing when Xav Trudeau’s song “Downtown” came on the radio at a Montreal Home Hardware.
“Xav, 18, is encouraging fans to share their own reaction vids when they hear the track – even if they don’t have a plunger on hand.”
The public didn’t take it well
Reactions to Xav Trudeau’s video (known by his pop star moniker as “Xav”) were predictable.
“ Can someone use that plunger and flush him down the toilet please?” posted one user.
“ Random thought: Has anyone ever stopped to think Justin has teamed up with Katy just so Xav can fast track his way into a career?” posted another.
Trudeau debut on Billboard charts
Naysayers be damned, Xav found himself over the weekend on the Billboard Canada Airplay Charts for the first time, with “Downtown” placing at No. 36 on the CHR/Top 40 Airplay chart for Aug. 15. The news comes shortly after a global distribution deal with Toronto record label 907 records and ADA Canada, a division of Warner Music Canada.
“Xav” also has a fan in his mother, Sophie Gregoire, posting a video on Instagram talking about his song while in a car with his mom.
“I can’t wait to hear it!” Gregoire says in the video.
