These newcomers will fill key roles for Illinois this fall
· Yahoo Sports
Aug. 19—The 2026 Illinois football season opener is just more than two weeks away, and on a team that has more newcomers than returning players, several key positions will be filled with players making their Illini debuts against UAB. Beat writer Scott Richey spotlights five:

Katin Houser
Quarterback
It's not hyperbole to call Houser the most important player on this year's roster. That's the responsibility — the burden — that rests on the starting quarterback's shoulders. Illinois found a rhythm offensively in three seasons of operating offensive coordinator 's system. Houser and Lunney have just a single season to get it right, with expectations higher in the moment for the offense in Lunney's fifth year on the job than for first-year defensive coordinator .
Jayshon Platt
Wide receiver
Illinois rebuilt its wide receiver corps this offseason, adding five transfers and six freshmen. That's 11 newcomers, which doesn't include converted quarterback , out of 16 total receivers. Platt's experience puts him at the top of the list of expected new contributors. The Florida Atlantic transfer caught 46 passes for 720 yards and five touchdowns last season, while also operating as the Owls' top kick returner, and will likely pull off the same double duty this year for the Illini.
Jakwon Morris
Cornerback
The position group with the fewest question marks in the Illinois defense is the secondary since , , and all are returnees. The fifth spot in the back end of Hauck's 3-3-5 scheme? That is likely Morris, who was ranked as the No. 1 junior college cornerback and the No. 4 overall JUCO prospect in the Class of 2026. The Illini beat out several Big Ten and SEC programs to land the former Northwest Mississippi Community College standout.
Only two projected offensive line starters played for Illinois last season, and right tackle 's lone start came in the Music City Bowl as ' replacement. Martin will occupy an important spot opposite Knapik this fall as the Illini's starting left tackle. Houser's blind side is his to protect, and the 6-7, 310-pounder out of St. Rose, La., is suited to the task. Martin started all 12 games at left tackle for Colorado State and allowed just two sacks in 490 pass blocking snaps.
didn't name drop Holmes for no reason. It's a regular move from the Illinois coach. Listen close enough to Bielema in interviews, and the players he weaves into his answers are the ones who show up on game day. Holmes, who was a constant in opposing backfields last season for Utah State, will fill a hybrid defensive line/linebacker position for Illinois. Holmes has already been "hard to handle" in that role, according to Hauck, as the Illini look to beef up their pass rush.
