‘Robot Olympics’ runner nearly splits in half after viral China crash

The “Robot Olympics” might be gaining more attention in the future after a robot runner went viral this week during a test session gone horribly wrong.

The World Humanoid Robot Games first debuted in 2025 in Beijing, China. However, the growing interest in robotic events is only beginning following a viral video surfaced this week.

A humanoid robot training for a running race at the 2026 edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games suffered a brutal malfunction. The runner managed to crash into a wall before nearly breaking in half and causing sparks to fly.

The upcoming 2026 Robot Games are set to take place in China once again with 50 events. Meanwhile, 666 teams are featured in the unique event with over 2,056 robots set to compete.

Robots competing in Olympic-style events certainly has its appeal. That’s especially the case considering many sports media events covered on ESPN and other networks.

During last year’s competition, 16 countries were represented in China during the inaugural Games. There’s certainly growing interest in the robotics and sports world though with so many addition teams competing this month.

The unusual event also features robot serving in roles traditionally held by humans, including flag bearers and robots performing dance routines.

It’s unclear if the World Humanoid Robot Games will ever achieve the popularity of the Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics, but viral stories like today’s are certainly entertaining to say the least.
