Mumbai Infra Update: Metro 4 Pit Line Clears CMRS Inspection; MMRDA Awaits Safety Report Ahead Of Diwali Launch
· Free Press Journal

Mumbai, August 22, 2026: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed another key step towards commencing services on the first phase of Metro 4 in Thane, with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) completing its inspection of the pit line on the 10.5-km Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction stretch.
The authority is now awaiting the CMRS report, which will determine whether any modifications or additional safety measures are required before the project proceeds towards final approval.

A senior MMRDA official said the inspection of the facility, planned for the routine inspection and maintenance of metro rakes, was completed a few days ago. The findings will form part of the safety assessment for the 10.5-km corridor.
If the CMRS recommends any changes or improvements, MMRDA will undertake the required work before moving ahead with the next stage.
Pit Line Crucial Until Car Shed Is Ready
The pit line has assumed greater importance as the Metro 4 car shed is yet to be completed. In the absence of a fully operational depot, the facility will provide an interim arrangement for carrying out essential maintenance and inspections of metro trains.
The facility can be used for examining components located beneath the rakes, including wheels, braking systems, suspension and other technical equipment.
While additional lines are generally provided in metro systems for purposes such as stabling trains, handling emergencies or moving rakes away from the main running line, the facility near Gaimukh will now serve an additional purpose — routine maintenance of metro rakes.
The CMRS inspection focused on establishing whether the arrangement can be safely used for this purpose.
Safety Testing Completed
The 10.5-km corridor had earlier cleared the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) testing in June.
The testing covered key systems, including train speed, signalling, safety mechanisms, rolling stock and track-related equipment. With the RDSO certification completed, the project has moved into the final stage of safety scrutiny by the CMRS.
The CMRS report is now awaited before the authority proceeds with any recommendations and subsequent approvals.
Metro Service Expected Around Diwali
MMRDA is expecting to secure the necessary approvals to commence operations around Diwali or by the end of 2026, subject to completion of the safety and regulatory process.
Metro 4 and Metro 4A form part of the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Gaimukh corridor. The first operational stretch between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction will cover eight stations.
The line is expected to provide an alternative public transport option for commuters in Thane, particularly those travelling along the increasingly congested Ghodbunder Road corridor.
Eight Stations In First Phase
The first phase will cover:
● Cadbury Junction
● Majiwada
● Kapurbawdi
● Tikuji-ni-Wadi
● Dongripada
● Vijay Garden
● Kasarvadavali
● Gaimukh
