Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo has been forced to end her season early due to a thigh injury, the German Athletics Association (DLV) said in a statement on Sunday.

The German suffered the injury during her fifth and final jump at the Diamond League event in Katowice, Poland, on Saturday and subsequently had to be treated at a hospital, DLV said.

"On my last jump, I wanted to give everything one last time. But while I was in the air, as I kicked out with my swinging leg, a sharp pain suddenly shot through it. I cut the jump short while I was still in the air and then stayed lying in the pit," Mihambo wrote on Instagram.

An MRI scan on Monday should provide details into the severity of the injury.

"Fortunately, based on the initial examinations, it doesn't seem quite as bad as we first feared. Apparently, I had a stroke of luck in the midst of this misfortune," Mihambo said.

However, the two-time world and European champion definitely won't be able to compete in any more events this year.
