Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Commuters on Polytechnic Crossing and adjoining roads are likely to get relief from frequent traffic congestion, with the traffic police planning to increase the road space at the busy junction.

The width of the rotary at Polytechnic Crossing will be reduced to create more space for the smooth movement of vehicles.

Besides, the boundary wall of the corner bungalow in Professor Colony, located near the crossing, will also be shifted back. These measures are expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at the junction.

Polytechnic Crossing is one of the city's busiest routes, with the highest volume of traffic coming from the Retghat side.

Several important roads converge at the crossing, including routes towards the Chief Minister's residence, Raj Bhawan, Smart City and Roshanpura.

Although traffic movement remains heavy throughout the day, congestion frequently becomes a problem during evening peak hours. The situation is particularly challenging on weekends and holidays, when a large number of people move towards Boat Club.

The traffic signal at the crossing generally remains switched off, but is activated during peak hours to regulate the movement of vehicles.

Police officials said the proposal was discussed during meetings with other departments. It was decided that the rotary would be made narrower to provide additional space for vehicles and facilitate smoother movement.

The boundary wall of the bungalow at the Professor Colony corner will also be shifted further back, increasing the available space at the crossing.

In addition, some dividers occupying space along the footpath on the road towards Retghat will be reduced to further widen the road.

Police commissioner Sanjay Kumar said the work would begin soon in coordination with the concerned departments.

Traffic congestion due to rainfall

Heavy rain on Sunday night and Monday led to traffic congestion at several places due to waterlogging.

Traffic movement was affected near Prabhat Petrol Pump, the road near Ashoka Garden police station, as well as in the Old City areas including Peer Gate, Shahjahanabad and Bhopal Talkies. Several other roads also witnessed congestion following the heavy rain.
