Bills QB Josh Allen Climbs Past Patrick Mahomes in Controversial Ranking

The NFL regular season is almost here, which means everyone’s attention will be focused on the quarterbacks throughout the year. Fortunately for the Buffalo Bills, they have one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Josh Allen. But how are NFL analysts viewing Allen as the season approaches?

For the past five years, it seems that Allen and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes have been engaged in a debate over who is the number one quarterback in the NFL. Mahomes has had the upper hand, beating Allen in the playoffs four times and winning three Super Bowl rings, while Allen has yet to appear in a Super Bowl.
However, Fox Sports believes that Allen is the number one quarterback heading into the season.
Fox Sports Thinks Allen is No. 1
On Monday, six Fox Sports analysts — Ben Arthur, Greg Auman, Bucky Brooks, Henry McKenna, Ralph Vacchiano and Eric Williams — ranked their top 10 quarterbacks heading into the season, with Allen at No. 1 and Mahomes at No. 2.
“If Allen could just win one championship, he might end up being in the conversation with Patrick Mahomes as the greatest quarterback of their generation,” Vacchiano wrote. “And really, he should be anyway. He’s finished in the top five in MVP voting four straight years, and five of the last six. That also includes four finishes in the top four.
“Allen still has the strongest arm in the game and is a lock to run for 500 yards and double-digit touchdowns every year. He may not be putting up the gaudy numbers he did earlier in his career, but he’s still averaged 3,700 passing yards and 27 touchdowns the last two seasons with a questionable arsenal of weapons and no true No. 1 receiver. Allen was also the MVP in 2024 and might have ended up finishing higher than third last year if the Bills could have prevented him from getting sacked a career-high 40 times.”
Allen Outranked Another AFC East QB
The other eight players on the list include Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford [No. 3], Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson [No. 4], Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow at [No. 5], New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye [No. 6], Dallas Cowboys signal caller Dak Prescott[ No. 7,] Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love [No. 8], Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert [No. 9], and rounding out the top 10 is Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
It’s not a big surprise to see NFL analysts list Allen as the No. 1 quarterback in the NFL. Even though Mahomes has three Super Bowl victories and four playoff head-to-head wins, there is an argument to be made that Allen is the most talented quarterback in the league. Allen can do everything from throwing to running, and he often carries the Bills on his back.
Mahomes is coming off a torn ACL that he suffered at the end of last season, which could take him a few months to fully recover from, even though he might start in Week 1. This could be the season for Allen to capitalize while Mahomes is still trying to get back to full strength after his ACL injury.
