Esteban Ocon Compares Ferrari Power Unit Failure to Karting After Double Haas DNF

Esteban Ocon linked the latest Ferrari power unit failure in F1 Dutch Grand Prix to like how the rear wheels get seized in karting, with Oliver Bearman facing similar fate.

Even though the Haas pair were not involved in the points battle in F1 Dutch GP, they both had separate moments in the grand prix. Ocon was pulled up for overtaking Williams’ Alexander Albon under yellow, while Bearman was pulled up for exiting the pitlane under red light on re-start.
Both were cleared, as Ocon was pushed back behind Albon for the re-start, while Bearman was handed a reprimand. But both suffered a Ferrari power unit failure of similar nature to retire from F1 Dutch GP. The Brit retired just before they could line-up on the grid for a re-start.
Bearman came to a halt early in F1 Dutch GP
“We haven’t taken the car back yet, so I’m not really sure,” said Bearman to media after the F1 Dutch GP. “From my side I felt the engine switch off and that’s all, like, I’m not sure exactly what happened. No, [we are] doing all we can from the reliability side and also from the performance side.
“Esteban’s car, they had a bit of a tough session and not where we want to be. Next weekend [in Monza] we have some upgrades, and I really hope that they can push us to where we need to be because we need to perform better,” summed up Bearman.
Ocon describes the failure as in karting
More than midway into the F1 Dutch GP, Ocon too came to a halt bringing out the Virtual Safety Car. He noted that it seemed like a similar problem to Bearman, when he spoke to Bearman’s dad and Haas F1 team, before speaking to the media in the media pen.
He described the switch off like the rear wheels seized like it happens in karting. “It’s a PU-related issue,” said Ocon. “I mean, the rear wheels, they like seized like karting and then I had no drive after Turn 3, so, yeah, it’s something related to the power unit.
“From what his dad and his team said, it sounds similar [to Bearman’s], yeah.” While Mercedes and its customer F1 teams have had issues with the power unit on their side, Ferrari and its customers have enjoyed better reliability until now in F1 2026. There was no immediate explanation as to what failed.
