The City of Gold ranked seventh in Time Out’s latest list of the Best Cities for Nightlife, putting Johannesburg ahead of destinations including Brighton, Beijing and Amsterdam.

The ranking comes at a time when nightlife around the world is changing, with younger crowds increasingly looking beyond traditional nightclubs for bars, live music, street parties, rooftop events and more intimate venues.

And Johannesburg appears to be adapting particularly well.

Johannesburg makes the list

According to Time Out, Johannesburg’s nightlife has long been defined by its ability to reinvent itself.

The city has moved from the warehouse parties of the 1990s to a diverse modern scene that spans deep house, techno, Afro-house, gqom, drum and bass and experimental sounds.

One of the city’s standout nightlife areas is Newtown, where several venues sit close together along Gwigwi Mrwebi Street.

Time Out highlights Club A.M., AND Club, Bad Manors and Carfax, describing the area as one of Johannesburg’s remaining true nightlife precincts.

For those looking for something less club-focused, areas such as Melville and Rosebank offer cocktail bars, pubs and other late-night options.

The city also scored particularly well for community

One of the most interesting aspects of Johannesburg’s ranking is that its nightlife isn’t simply about how many clubs the city has.

A major factor was community.

Time Out‘s survey found that 80% of people living in Johannesburg said it is easy to find connection and community in the city.

That helped distinguish Johannesburg from some of the other cities on the list.

The city also scored 66% for affordability, making it one of the more affordable nightlife destinations featured.

According to the ranking, Johannesburg residents rated clubbing, casual pubs and cocktail bars among the city’s best after-dark activities.

The top 10

Johannesburg’s seventh-place position puts it alongside some of the world’s most famous nightlife destinations.

Bangkok took first place, followed by Berlin and New York City. Melbourne and São Paulo rounded out the top five, with Medellín in sixth and Johannesburg in seventh.

Brighton, Beijing and Amsterdam completed the top 10.

The ranking is particularly notable because only one city per country was allowed onto the final list, giving Johannesburg the chance to represent Mzansi on the global stage.

How was the list compiled?

Time Out surveyed people living in cities around the world about their local nightlife.

Participants were asked about factors including the quality and affordability of nightlife, clubbing and bars, community, safety, diversity and how exciting and welcoming their city feels after dark.

Time Out’s editors, culture experts and things-to-do specialists then used the results to select the final ranking.
