Giancarlo Stanton’s future with the New York Yankees has become increasingly uncertain after ESPN insider Buster Olney offered his view on what could happen next.
Stanton has not played since April 24 after suffering a right calf strain. His latest setback, a moderate left calf strain suffered while running the bases during his recovery, has made a return this season difficult.

The 36-year-old was moved to the 60-day injured list on August 25, with Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledging that it will be difficult for Stanton to return in time to contribute this season.

Speaking on The Michael Kay Show, Olney pushed back against the idea that New York should simply release Stanton.
‘There’s no upside for the Yankees in releasing him now,’ Olney said, pointing to the fact that Stanton is due just $15 million next year according to the discussion.
Olney suggested the Yankees could bring him to Spring Training, see how he looks and potentially hope for a resurgence.
‘Maybe he winds up playing 100 games and hits 30 home runs,’ Olney said.
There is also another major incentive for Stanton to continue playing. He currently has 456 career home runs, meaning he is 44 away from the 500 mark.
Olney believes reaching 500 could become an important part of Stanton’s Hall of Fame case, while also suggesting the veteran could eventually continue his career with another team rather than remain in New York.
That possibility could become more likely as Aaron Judge gets older and the Yankees look to use him more often as a designated hitter.

Yet his best moments have come when the stakes are highest. During the 2024 ALCS, Stanton hit four home runs and drove in seven runs against Cleveland, earning ALCS MVP honours.
For now, Olney expects Stanton to keep trying to play. With $25 million owed to him in 2027 and a $25 million club option for 2028 carrying a $10 million buyout, his next season could determine whether his Yankees career has one more chapter.
