Patriots EVP Eliot Wolf has 'zero concern' on in-conference trade with Texans for Kayshon Boutte

It doesn't sound like the New England Patriots are too concerned about his departure.

Following a trade that sent Boutte to the Texans in exchange for a future seventh-round pick and defensive back Jaylen Reed, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf defended the move, stating that New England sees a future with Reed in the secondary.

Another reason for the in-conference trade was because of New England's offseason. Wolf pointed out, following the trade for All-Pro A.J. Brown and the signing of Romeo Doubs, that New England has a deep receiver room thanks to a promising offseason.

 “We have guys that can play in multiple positions," Wolf told reporters Tuesday. "They all really complement each other well. Obviously, when we acquired Romeo and A.J., something had to give because we have guys that can play in the slot, guys that can play Z, and block and play special teams. So, there are just a lot of different elements, and we feel really good about the guys that we have in the room.”

Since the start of the offseason, Boutte had been rumored to be on the market. With the arrival of Brown and Doubs, plus the stability of DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams, it became clear the club would likely move on from the wideout since his rep count would decrease.

Boutte, who enters the final year of his rookie contract, has impressed in New England. Last season as the No. 2 weapon for Drake Maye, the speedster totaled 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games. He also proved to be one of the league's best deepth threats, averaging nearly 17 yards per catch.

Despite the rumors, Boutte's play continued to impress during camp, thus increasing his value. In the end, knowing his role would be limited, Wolf and New England elected to give Houston the one-year rental in exchange for three potential seasons of Reed.

“We followed his career last year with Houston and thought it was pretty remarkable that, as a rookie who hadn’t played much during the regular season, they trusted him enough to play the majority of the playoff games," Wolf said of Reed.

It's strange seeing two conference contenders make trades this late in the preseason, especially when the player involved was the catalyst in helping one team surpass the other in the divisional round. But Wolf is confident that while Houston's offense will improve, so will New England's secondary.

"There was no concern about that, and I don’t think there was any concern for them to send us a safety that we think can play,” Wolf said.
