The 2026 preseason is behind us. Now, all eyes turn toward the NFL’s annual cutdown day.
By Sunday, August 30, at 6:00 p.m. ET, each of the league’s 32 organizations will need to trim their current 90-man rosters by 37 players, finalizing initial 53-man rosters and marking the beginning of the 2026 regular season. With a minimum of 1,184 transactions taking place this weekend, cutdown day is the culmination of the league’s preseason evaluation period for clubs, and a bittersweet day in locker rooms. For the New England Patriots, it will finally answer many of the lingering and most pressing questions surrounding the team’s depth.

Additions

For many teams, cutdown weekend also represents an opportunity to identify and acquire talent from around the NFL via the waiver wire or late-round draft pick swaps. There’s already been activity on that end for the Patriots, who have used future Day 3 capital to secure likely cut candidates from other organizations before they were available to other teams ahead of them on the waiver wire (New England holds the 31st selection in waiver claims following their appearance in Super Bowl LX). These are all of the new faces in Foxboro:
Running Back Corey Kiner: Acquired in an August 29 trade with the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round draft pick.
Safety Jaylen Reed: Acquired with a 2028 seventh-round draft pick in an August 25 trade with the Houston Texans in exchange for wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.
