Suspect arrested in R635m Tembisa Hospital tender fraud case

The Hawks arrested a 37-year-old suspect in connection with the alleged R635 million Tembisa Hospital fraud case.

According to the Hawks, the accused was arrested on Friday at OR Tambo International Airport after returning to the country from an overseas trip.

TEMBISA HOSPITAL MULTIMILLION-RAND TENDER FRAUD CASE
The accused is facing charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption.
It is alleged that certain hospital officials worked with service providers to manipulate the procurement system.
The officials and service providers allegedly exploited the Request for Quotations (RFQ) procurement process for transactions below R500,000.
This approach was allegedly used to avoid the formal tender process.
SUSPECT TO APPEAR IN COURT
The accused will appear in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, 31 August 2026.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the accused has allegedly been part of the investigation into the Tembisa Hospital multimillion-rand tender fraud.
Mogale said the arrest highlights their commitment to bring those behind the corruption to justice.
TEMBISA HOSPITAL LOOTING SCANDALThe Special Investigating Unit (SIU) also released an interim report on its corruption investigation into Tembisa Hospital in 2025.
The SIU investigation began in 2022 after whistleblower Babita Deokaran was assassinated.
Deokaran was a senior official in the Health Department and was killed in 2021 after she exposed irregular payments and corruption at the hospital.
The SIU report revealed that three coordinated syndicates were allegedly looting over R2 billion meant for healthcare at Tembisa Hospital.

Hangwani Morgan Maumela was implicated in the alleged looting of hospital funds.
The syndicates were also allegedly run by Rudolph Mazibuko and Stefan Govindraju.
