How am a feeling about the conferences? There are 10 playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision. As the season approaches, here is my list — in reverse order of course.
If you think I've lost my marbles with the order, let me have it at . Remember, I'm sensitive so please no digital booing if that is a thing.
5. AMERICAN 14
Memphis
— The Tigers got off to an impressive start Saturday with a win at UNLV in Charlie Huff's debut as coach. The Rebels had been considered the most likely Group of Six school to earn a College Football Playoff bid, but that nod now moves to Memphis.
Quarterback Marcus Stokes threw for 223 yards and two scores as the Tigers rallied from a second-half deficit to win 27-21.
Stokes came to Memphis from Division II West Florida. He added 45 yards on the ground.
— Only one starter returned to the Tigers on offense and none on defense. Didn't seem to matter in the opener with Southern Miss transfer tailback Jaylin Carter zipping for 97 yards and a touchdown. Carter followed Huff from Hattiesburg.
— The American earned a bid in last season's CFP with Tulane doing the honors. Jon Sumrall used his banner season in New Orleans to help him land the job at Florida. In fact, many of the American bosses landed promotions to the Power Four, including one-time Illinois assistant Alex Golesh, who went from South Florida to Auburn. Big-time programs are turning to the American to fill high-profile positions. Huff could be one of the next on the list.
CIRCLE THE DATE
Memphis at Navy, Nov. 21.
If the season follows form, this one will decide who plays for the American title. The Tigers owe Navy, which won in 2025 at Memphis.
