SC dismisses plea seeking fuel pumps to disclose ethanol content in petrol

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking that the percentage of ethanol blended in petrol be mandatorily disclosed at fuel pumps, Bar and Bench reported.
The petitioner can approach the “competent authority” in the matter, held a bench of Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale.
The government’s Ethanol Blended Petrol programme mandates that all petrol sold in the country be blended with 20% ethanol – a substance produced from sugarcane and food grain. The policy is aimed at reducing India’s dependency on fossil fuels, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and boosting income for sugarcane farmers.
However, consumers have complained that the new fuel mix damages engines and reduces their mileage.
Advocate Narendra Kumar Goswami had moved the Supreme Court, seeking that the Union government direct petrol pumps to mandatorily display the exact percentage of ethanol on every petrol dispensing nozzle, reported Live Law.
Goswami said that invoices given to consumers should also mention the percentage of ethanol in the petrol sold.
“I have right to be informed,” he contended. “If I buy petrol there is no mention of E20.”
Appearing for the Union government, Attorney General R Venkataramani said that the court had already dismissed pleas challenging the policy.
The petitioner said that he was not challenging the policy. “Even when we buy a packet of biscuits we know the ingredients,” he told the court.
