Lando Norris Points to Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher in Explaining McLaren Stay

Lando Norris has signed with McLaren through at least the end of 2030, and his explanation for staying is, arguably, refreshingly uncomplicated: He believes the team can keep giving him championship-winning machinery, and he actually likes the people involved. The contract extension announced by McLaren and Norris earlier this week includes a multi-year option beyond 2030. Norris will be 31 when that initial term expires. He joined McLaren as a test and development driver in 2017 before making his F1 race debut with the team in 2019, meaning the deal could carry him through 12 seasons wearing papaya.
Norris Prefers a Winning Home to a Fresh Start
Norris’s thoughts for this are built around opportunity. McLaren won the Constructors’ Championship in 2024 and 2025, while Norris captured the 2025 Drivers’ title, his first and McLaren’s first drivers’ crown since 2008. That is a difficult situation to walk away from, particularly when the organization still appears capable of producing another title contending car.
“Well, I don’t I don’t think many people decided to leave while the team was doing good,” he told the press. “I don’t think that was the case. You know, when people have left – when Lewis left – he left in a new era of Mercedes. And he kind of prepared himself for when Mercedes were going to be very, very strong. And I’m sure he had a good idea about some of these things.
“It wasn’t like he was winning everything with McLaren and then was just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to decide to leave.’ Neither was Schumacher. So I don’t think anyone’s decided to leave while being very successful. I feel like there’s no reason for Max to leave when he knows he’s with a team that can win world championships. There’s no reason for Charles to leave when he knows he can probably win world championships with Ferrari. So, it’s ditto for me. I believe I can win world championships, more world championships with McLaren. And there’s no reason for me to want to leave. I don’t think it’s anything more than that, honestly.”
Lando Norris Wouldn’t Mind Staying at McLaren Throughout His Whole Career
“It might be. And certainly for me, I’d be very, very happy and proud to to only be with McLaren my whole career. I don’t often like change, so for me, that’s a perfect thing. But I guess it’s two big decisions for me. One is, ‘Can we win world championships? Do I believe I’m with a team that can give me a car to deliver back for them and win more races, world championships together?’
“Easy answer, yes. And, “Do do I enjoy the company? Do I enjoy the people that I’m working with?” And for me, this is pretty close in terms of… almost 50-50 in terms of being on an equal playing field to who I believe I can win with this team. And therefore, I don’t want to go to a team that kind of maybe has an equal opportunity, but just do something new.
“I’d rather be with people that I enjoy spending time with and stay with the family that gave me the chance in Formula 1. So, for me, it’s also, am I just having fun with the people that I’m with? And I am, so there’s no reason to change at all.”
McLaren Still Has to Earn His Confidence
This is not blind loyalty. Norris’s 2026 season began badly for McLaren. He missed the Australian season opener, and neither McLaren started the following race in China. Norris was seemingly unfazed by the poor start, especially as the team responded quickly. Upgrade packages at Zandvoort helped produce pole position and a second consecutive victory. The results explain why Norris can separate a temporary slump from a broken project.
The championship table still gives McLaren work to do. As of ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli leads with 242 points, followed by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton on 183 each. Norris sat fourth with 159, 83 behind Antonelli, while Charles Leclerc had 155, Max Verstappen 112, and Oscar Piastri 104.
“We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning,” Norris said. That is the deal. McLaren does not need to be perfect every weekend, but it does need to remain credible as a championship team. If it does, Norris has already made clear that home is preferable to wandering around the paddock looking for a better address.
