This year’s College Football Playoff will remain at 12 teams, but there’s no telling whether that will hold in future seasons.

It feels like a matter of time before the CFP committee expands the field to 24 teams, and if that happens, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey wants to ensure his own priorities are included.

According to Yahoo Sports and On3’s Ross Dellenger, Sankey has outlined his priorities for a 24-team playoff, which include a requirement for teams to play 10 games against Power 4 opponents to qualify. He sent the memo to the CFP management committee.
This likely means that teams can’t schedule all “cupcake” opponents for their non-conference schedules. They can schedule at least one, but Sankey wants them to play at least one Power 4 non-conference game.
As expected, college football fans are pretty mixed on this idea.
“24? Can we just do 16 and never touch it again?” one fan posted on X.
“Why play a regular season, then? Just make it a 134-team playoff,” another fan posted.
“Yes. P4 conferences should all play nine conference games and at least one P4 crossover, also no FCS games,” another post read.
“The 10-game requirement is not asking too much of anyone. Hard to think the Big Ten/B12/ACC would stand against this,” another post read.
“What’s the point of even playing the regular season anymore?” another fan posted.
“Honestly, this makes sense. 10 P4 games to qualify. Curious if this leads to a 13-game regular season and a 10-game conference schedule,” another post read.
We’ll see if this gets any legs when the CFP committee meets again to discuss expansion.
