Why Michael Penix Jr.’s readiness makes the Falcons’ $20M contract choice a simple decision
· Yahoo Sports
Michael Penix Jr.’s fifth-year option is ought to be obvious. As the Falcons decide whether to commit more than $20 million to their quarterback, the answer on the table is a simple yes.
Penix is one of the 2024 first-round picks whose option has yet to be decided. There are real questions about his durability after a third torn ACL ended his 2025 season.

Even so, this one is straightforward.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell laid out the stakes.
‘Each of the six players would be looking at significant guaranteed money, potentially north of $20 million, hitting their contracts in 2028 if the fifth-year option decisions go their way,’ he wrote.
For Penix, the numbers from 2025 are mixed. He posted a 57.9 Total QBR in nine starts, completing 60 per cent of his passes for 1,982 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
The year ended with surgery, and that is where the doubt comes from.
But look at the wider picture. Starting quarterbacks now earn $40 to $50 million a year. Locking Penix in at around $20 million would be a bargain if he even looks close to a long-term answer.

It is not a multi-year mistake waiting to happen. It is a one-year flyer on the most important position in sports.
This is not the J.J. McCarthy situation, where the team already knows the answer. There is still real potential with Penix, and he has shown enough that letting him walk a year early would be the bigger error.
His readiness supports the call. Penix has been cleared for 11-on-11 work since late August, and NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe has reported the Falcons plan to start him eventually, with Tua Tagovailoa serving as a placeholder early on.
Nobody in the building seems to believe the Penix experiment is over. The option gives them one more season to find out for certain what they have.
At $20 million for a quarterback of his upside, the mathematical risk is tiny compared to the reward. The Falcons should pick it up without overthinking it.
