New Resident Evil Teaser Trailer Reveals First Glimpse at Creature That Looks a Lot Like Las Plagas

A new Spanish-language teaser trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie includes never-before-seen footage of a tentacle-like mutation that looks frighteningly similar to Las Plagas from Resident Evil 4.

The teaser, published on September 4, 2026, sees Bryan Hodukavich (played by Austin Abrams) cautiously walk into the maternity ward of a hospital, which seems to have been overtaken by some kind of fleshy substance — and, tragically, so have all the bassinets meant to hold newborn babies.

Another shot from the trailer shows a corpse’s feet being consumed by thin, wormlike vines. That corpse raises itself up a second later, seemingly animated by one of these vines protruding from its cheek as a horrified Hodukavich looks on.

Needless to say, this has already sparked comparisons to Las Plagas, the parasite responsible for the Los Illuminados Incident in RE4. That particular mutation notably boasted tentacle-like growths, which would transform into terrifying beings as their growth stages progressed.

Cregger has been open about his inspiration for his Resident Evil movie, saying that RE4 and RE7 had the biggest influence on his creative approach to the film. "I like the idea of borrowing the rhythm and scale from [Resident Evil] 4 and using some of the character elements from [Resident Evil] 7," he said in a September 1 Reddit AMA.

"7 is when Ethan comes into it, and I like that you're just a normal dude going through this horrible situation. 4 has the rhythm that I really like where you're moving from set piece to set piece and location to location. 4 is such a big game. You go through all these different – it feels like worlds, from the village to the castle, to the island. It's just like, it keeps giving and giving."

That wasn’t the only exciting reveal from Cregger’s Resident Evil movie today; the film’s official social media accounts also shared a promotional poster showing X-ray imaging of a Doberman Pinscher — the dog breed that famously antagonizes players in several of the early games. The post’s caption reads: "The subject is… changing," implying that this particular Doberman has been infected with the T-Virus.

It’s a lovely callback to the earlier Resident Evil games, and yet another Easter egg that Cregger has included in his interpretation of the series alongside a wealth of other references that connect his vision to the source material.

Cregger’s movie tells a new story that follows an average Joe who gets caught up in the madness of the Raccoon City Incident. Although he was staunchly against making a one-to-one recreation of the games to avoid rehashing "stories that [they] tell so well," Cregger understands why fans might be hesitant to give him a chance, telling IGN in an exclusive interview that he was "naive" to think fans would be onboard with him avoiding a direct adaptation of the games.
