Selected Shots Sunday: Sports in Full Swing

A new Mizzou Athletics sports season is officially upon us! While the last few years I’ve assigned this written piece to one of our talented photographers, I’m taking it over this year, and will be selecting my favorites of the week. Since I am not a photographer at heart, my analysis will be more surface level, but I’ll try my best!

This week, Mizzou fans were in for a treat, with a top-25 volleyball matchup against Oregon & former teammate Marina Crownover, football’s opener against Arkansas Pine-Bluff, soccer’s (very early) senior day against SEMO. I also got to take a tour of the new north endzone complex, and grabbed some photos, and Dan, while working for Mizzou Athletics, captured from photos from their season opener at Iowa State.

Running away with it

I loved both of these photos from Margo from the Tigers’ Senior Day rout of SEMO on Friday night in Columbia. Here, we see freshman Rylie Morse (left), who scored two goals on the day, and senior Taryn Chance (right) being chased by SEMO defenders. With the Redhawks only getting one shot off the entire game, they spent the game quite literally chasing Missouri players.

Pinwheel

I love this photo from Dan, who is in his second season working as a photographer for Mizzou TFXC. It reminds me of a pinwheel and I love the angle of the shot taken at the Cyclone Opener at Iowa State. Both the Mizzou men and women placed second in the event.

Black & Yellow

I love the simplicity of this photo from Thursday’s home opener, and find that all the action is in the middle of the photo to be so visually appealing. It also was so interesting to me that both teams have the same colors and when I first arrived at Memorial Stadium, I actually wasn’t sure which team was which!

Wakanda Forever

Jamal Roberts didn’t have the best start to the season, only averaging 3.6 yards and rushing 47 yards in 13 attempts in his season debut against Arkansas Pine-Bluff, but I still find him to be an exciting player who I’m looking forward to watching this season. In this photo, he perfectly executes the King T’Challa ‘Wakanda Forever’ pose from Marvel’s Black Panther. (RIP Chadwick Boseman 😞)

Face Off

I absolutely love that Margo got this shot, as it’s not a typical sports action photo and more pre-action, with four seconds remaining on the clock before the snap. I love the concentration in this one from both teams.

Lions and Tigers, oh my

Thursday’s game featured two mascots considered kings of the jungle, the Golden Lions and the Tigers. Of course, the Tigers emerged victorious, mauling their prey in the 51-14 defeat. Who’s the king now?!

I also just really like this photo, and this was the first time I noticed that both teams have the same stripe on their helmet, just with alternating colors.

Mizzou Brew

Kansas City’s Boulevard Brewing Co. has introduced a new beer for the season, Mizzou Brew, and I was completely enamored with the can. The cartoon tigers playing all of the sports is just so freaking FUN, and I can definitely see myself buying one every game, despite its exorbitant price point. It’s just SO COOL, and tastes pretty good, too!

Sad news for those who can’t make the visit to Memorial Stadium, the tall boys are only available at the stadium as far as I know — they didn’t have them at Hearnes yet this past week, so it might just be a Faurot thing — so you’re left to buy one of the regular 12-packs to celebrate the stadium’s 100th anniversary.

Point Mizzou!

While the Tigers ultimately couldn’t take down no. 25 Oregon on Tuesday night, they did pull of a win in the first set, and continued to fight like hell in the third and fourth sets to give them a chance. I love this photo of libero Aionah Cruz celebrating with her teammates after a point. Not pictured: the men’s swim team removing an article of clothing as a result of the Mizzou point.

Enemy Territory

While the Ducks ultimately emerged victorious, the Heart of Hearnes did its thing on Tuesday night to make it hard on the opponent. It was a very spirited environment, and I hope they keep this up all season. In the photo on the left, Alanah Clemente is subsequently cheered by her teammates and booed by the student section, and on the right, rowdy fans attempt to distract Reese Sheppard.

Stretch Armstrong

If I were to award a photo of the week, it would be this one of Utah State transfer Lauren Larkin, who is doing her best Super Stretch Armstrong impression to get a hand on the ball. Larkin was very good in this one, leading the team with 14 kills, while adding four blocks.

F kU Week

Last Monday, the media was invited out to the new north endzone facility to check out all the fancy new upgrades. Part of the tour included a chance to walk around on the turf and see the new Rock M up close. Freshmen are given the chance to write on a rock, and while most wrote MIZ or their names or something cutesie, several amazing students took this time to share terms of endearment for our most hated rivals, the kansas Jayhawks. Since it’s officially Hate Week, this seemed like a great time to share these with the Rock M audience.

Honorable Mention: NO FEET ALLOWED

I was minding my own business pre-game at the Mizzou-Oregon match and what do I see, but someone’s nasty bare feet that they put on the chair in my row. DO YOU LIVE IN A BARN? You are in a public place. Put your shoes on, you sicko. Since I had to be subjected to this atrocity, I’ve decided you do as well. I am including this photo despite the protests of my colleagues Dan Murphy and Ben Hartong.
