Will Parker Washington Sign an Extension with Jaguars Before Week 1?

They still have one gigantic piece of business to finish before then.
After last season ended, Jaguars' general manager James Gladstone's three biggest offseason priorities were to reach contract extensions with wide receiver Parker Washington, tight end Brenton Strange, and edge rusher Travon Walker.
Two of those priorities were accomplished. Walker signed a huge four-year, $110 million extension in April.
Strange was next, inking his own new three-year deal in June.
As for Washington, nothing. At least not yet.
Entering the final year of his rookie contract this year, Washington exploded onto the scene for Jacksonville in 2025. He finished the season as the team's leading receiver, easily blowing past his previous career highs in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns. Washington also remained one of the most dynamic punt returners in the NFL, averaging 13.6 yards per return and taking two to the house.
It may be premature to call Washington a star, but he is on the cusp.
Which seems like a perfect time for a team to extend a player. Signing a player on the cusp of stardom is usually much cheaper than waiting for him to get there.
Washington's outstanding offseason has left little doubt that he will, in fact, get there.
The fourth-year Penn State product has cemented himself as one of Jacksonville's most dangerous weapons, and all signs indicate that he will be even better this season. He has made people wonder if he is the Jaguars' best WR, quite a compliment in a group that also includes Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, and Travis Hunter.
The longer the team takes to extend Washington, the more his price is going up.
Just a couple of months ago, it was thought Jacksonville could sign the dynamic receiver to a deal approaching $55-60 million over three years.
Those days are gone.
Wide receiver salaries have exploded. Jaxon Smith-Njigba reset the market by signing a four-year, $168.6 million extension with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason.
Just a few days ago, the Arizona Cardinals gave Michael Wilson a new three-year extension worth $75 million. Like Washington, Wilson had his own breakout season in 2025.
Now, Wilson's new deal is seen as the baseline for any potential Washington extension.
While it remains likely that the Jaguars will eventually get a deal done with Washington, the question has shifted to "when?"
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN recently suggested that it may still happen before Jacksonville's season opener.
Washington Prefers Deal Before Week 1According to Fowler, the Jaguars wouldn't mind continuing to negotiate during the season, but Washington prefers to get a deal done before Week 1.
"Both sides have been talking about a contract. This one does have a chance to get done before Week 1. I'm told the player would prefer to get it done and not have this linger into the season. Whereas Jacksonville is comfortable continuing talks during the season if the player wants to engage."
Final ThoughtsIt would be better for the team and Washington to get this deal done as soon as possible. Washington doesn't want to go into the season without a new contract, and Jacksonville is only going to have to pay more the longer it takes.
If Jacksonville can build on its terrific 2025 season, Washington will undoubtedly be a huge reason why. He was tremendous over the second half of last season. Washington was not only one of Trevor Lawrence's most popular targets, but also one of the most explosive.
Washington and the organization both want to get an extension done. The Jaguars have likely already cost themselves a lot of money by not getting it done months ago.
Hopefully, Fowler's intel is right, and both sides will work diligently to put pen to paper as soon as this week. Nothing would be better than celebrating a Washington extension and a Week 1 victory back-to-back.
