The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, has reversed its decision to cancel the convocation for the graduating batch of 2026, Live Law reported on Thursday.
The ceremony will be held on October 17, the students were informed.
On August 27, the university said that it had cancelled the convocation for the batch, originally planned for September 12, citing “unavoidable circumstances”. The decision came amid opposition from more than 700 students and alumni to Chief Justice Surya Kant and Bar Council of India Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra attending the ceremony.
The university did not state whether the chief justice had been invited for the convocation in October, The Hindu reported.
Students and alumni had objected to Kant’s attendance over his remarks during a hearing on alleged police excesses against protesters in Delhi. They had also opposed the Bar Council’s now-withdrawn directive against students of the National Law University in Hyderabad after they campaigned against the chief justice’s participation in their convocation.
The proposal to hold the event in October was approved by the college’s executive council and general council on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by Kant in his capacity as the university’s chancellor, the newspaper reported.
