Pune: Mounting debt and suspected losses from online gaming are being examined by Pune police following the alleged suicide of 28-year-old MPSC aspirant Prathamesh Deshmukh at his rented accommodation in Navi Peth.

Deshmukh, a native of Paranda in Dharashiv district, had been staying in Pune while preparing for the Maharashtra Public Service Commission examinations, Deputy Commissioner of Police Krushikesh Rawale said.

He allegedly left behind a two-page note mentioning 18-19 individuals from whom he had borrowed money, along with details of the amounts he had repaid.
Police are questioning his family members to ascertain the circumstances in which he borrowed the money and whether losses linked to online gaming contributed to his financial difficulties. The exact circumstances leading to his death are being investigated.

The incident has also raised concerns over the financial and psychological pressure faced by youngsters living in Pune while preparing for competitive examinations.
Rawale said the matter was under investigation and that technical analysis would help establish which online game Deshmukh had been playing. “After the technical analysis, it will be disclosed soon which game he was playing. Accordingly, necessary steps will be taken against such platforms,” he said.
