Carnell Tate Fantasy Week 1 Start or Sit: Rosterable, Not a Must-Start

PFN’s Week 1 rankings put Tate 28th among wide receivers for his NFL debut, and the Jets didn’t intercept a single pass last season. Still, Tennessee can commit to the ground game for 60 minutes in a spot like this. I have a hard time thinking I ever feel like he’s a must start as a rookie.
Should You Start or Sit Carnell Tate in Week 1?
Emeka Egbuka and Tetairoa McMillan both averaged north of 11 PPR points per game in September last season, proving again that the NFL is largely good at labeling elite prospects at the receiver position.

I expect Tate’s rookie season to be more similar to that of McMillan (limited spikes but consistent volume) than Egbuka (peaks and valleys) and while that is obviously a rosterable projection, I have a hard time thinking that I ever feel like he’s a must start as a rookie.

That’s more of a situation thing than it is a talent one. Wan’Dale Robinson is a target earner and part of Cam Ward’s development figures to be an increased level of importance placed on staying ahead of the chains. Tony Pollard is far from exciting, but he’s going to be the lead of an average run game, and when combined with what Robinson does, that limits the ceiling potential for their ultra-talented rookie.
The Jets famously didn’t intercept a pass in 2025, and while Ward’s rookie campaign wasn’t elite, he did support a receiver reaching double-digit PPR points on 12 occasions (five games with 15 or more points).
I like Tate to account for the majority of those usable weeks and maybe he can get there in his debut, but I’m not ranking him as a top-30 option because I fear that this is one of the few weeks this season in which Tennessee can commit to the ground game for 60 minutes.

Ward averaged 33.6 passes per game last fantasy season, and in weeks where I project him to reach that number, Tate will be in the low-end WR2 conversation. I come in a handful of attempts light in this spot and that has me chasing volume (either Cardinals receiver) or touchdown equity (Quentin Johnston/DK Metcalf types) over the fourth overall pick in his first taste of the pro game.
