The Atlanta Falcons opened the 2026 season with a 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game also brought an early setback along the defensive line.

Da’Shawn Hand joined Atlanta on a one-year deal this offseason, but his first game with the team did not go as planned. His early exit added another concern for the Falcons’ defense.

Da’Shawn Hand suffers season-ending quad injury in Falcons debut

Da’Shawn Hand’s first game of the 2026 season with the Atlanta Falcons ended early against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The defensive lineman suffered an injury near the start of the second quarter and left the game. He did not return for the rest of the night.

Hand played seven defensive snaps and did not record a tackle before leaving. Atlanta finished the opener without Hand after his departure.

Hand’s injury was initially described as a knee issue. He then underwent further medical checks as the team looked for a clearer diagnosis. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport later reported that Hand was believed to have suffered a torn quadriceps that could require surgery. At that point, Hand was getting multiple medical opinions, so his final status for the rest of the season had not yet been settled.

Rapoport wrote: “#Falcons DL Da’Shawn Hand is believed to have suffered a torn quad that could require surgery and end his season, sources say. Hand is receiving multiple opinions and a final diagnosis will tell the full story.”

Initial evaluations had not yet produced a final diagnosis. Hand continued to seek additional medical opinions before a final decision was made.

The uncertainty ended once testing confirmed torn quadriceps. Atlanta signed him to a one-year, $3 million contract during the offseason after he spent the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Chargers. Hand started all 13 games for the Chargers last season, finishing with 29 tackles, 1.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, four passes defended and one interception.

Atlanta expected Hand to provide experience along the interior defensive line. The 30-year-old stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 302 pounds.

Testing confirmed a torn quadriceps that requires surgery. The injury ended his first season with Atlanta almost immediately.

Da’Shawn Hand injury leaves Falcons short on defensive line depth

The Atlanta Falcons entered the 2026 season without Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. Walker suffered a torn ACL during training camp and will miss the entire season. Pearce is serving an eight-game suspension after violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy. Da’Shawn Hand will miss the remainder of the year because of a torn quadriceps.

Hand joined Atlanta after spending the previous season with the Chargers. His debut ended shortly after it began.

The Falcons have Brandon Dorlus, LaCale London, Gervon Dexter Sr. and Maason Smith along the interior defensive line. Dexter joined Atlanta in an August trade with the Chicago Bears. The Falcons sent cornerback Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round pick to Chicago in the deal. Dexter is 6-foot-6 and weighs 326 pounds. He recorded 13.5 sacks during his first three NFL seasons with the Bears.

Dorlus recorded 8.5 sacks for Atlanta in 2025. London has been with the Falcons since 2024, while Smith is also part of the team’s defensive-line group. Zach Harrison and Cameron Thomas are among the other defensive linemen on Atlanta’s roster.

Hand, 30, entered the NFL in 2018 when the Detroit Lions selected him in the fourth round of the draft. He later played for the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins and Chargers before joining Atlanta. Including his seven defensive snaps against Pittsburgh, Hand has played 78 NFL games and started 26 of them. He has recorded 131 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and one interception in his career.

The Falcons will return home for Week 2, hosting the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta will have to adjust its defensive-line rotation without Hand as it prepares for its next game.
