MM 9.15: Malik Washington named a Manning Award Star of the Week

· Yahoo Sports

After one of the worst performances of his young college career to start the 2026 season — he threw for 186 yards and struggled with accuracy — Malik Washington eased any concerns on Saturday.

The sophomore quarterback erupted for 347 passing yards and two touchdowns, including a program-record 18 straight completions. That outing earned him a spot on the Manning Award Stars of the Week list, which recognizes eight of the top performances in college football.

While Washington’s arm talent was on full display during the 38-14 rout, he also showcased his physicality in the run game. On a fourth-down play early in the second quarter, Washington rolled out to his right and scrambled toward the first-down marker. He took a hard hit and was ruled short on a controversial call.

With the receiving talent around him, Washington appears poised for another stellar campaign. Chris Durr Jr. and Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding each posted 100 receiving yards — the first Maryland duo to do that since 2023.

Washington will look to build on that standout performance Saturday in a critical nonconference game against Virginia Tech.
