Under Michael Carrick's guidance, the club finished third in the Premier League, securing a return to the UEFA Champions League and showing signs of promise that the Red Devils can once again become a contender for domestic and European prizes.
Unfortunately, there has been significant turmoil at Old Trafford from within. Fans have begun to protest the club's handling of season ticket holders, they lost in controversial circumstances to 10-man Manchester City in Sunday's derby and now there is discord with one of the squad's most valuable young players.
Teenage sensation J.J. Gabriel, the crown jewel of United's youth program, has reportedly asked to leave the club, according to a report by Matt Law of The Telegraph in mid-September, just a week after Gabriel became the youngest player to score a hat-trick in a UEFA Youth League match by bagging three goals against Sabah.

Why does J.J. Gabriel want to leave Man United?
It's unclear at this point why J.J. Gabriel wants to leave Manchester United. Matt Law's report in The Telegraph does not give an explicit reason for his desire to depart the club.
It could be that Gabriel feels he is good enough to be playing for the first team, but at 15 years old, it's hard to imagine him making that request in a make-or-break fashion.
Gabriel has reportedly garnered interest from other big European clubs, including Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. It could simply be that Gabriel and his camp feel that his development has outgrown United's level, and that he has the capability to rise to the level of another European giant.
How old is J.J. Gabriel?
Born in October of 2010, Man United prospect J.J. Gabriel is 15 years old.
Premier League rules state that players cannot sign professional contracts with a club until they are 17 years old, while they can sign scholarship agreements when they turn 16.
If he makes a first-team appearance for Manchester United in the next month, before October 25, he would become Man United's youngest-ever player, beating the record of 16 years, 19 days old set by David Gaskell set way back in 1956.
Is J.J. Gabriel signing for another club?
At this point, there is nothing imminent about Gabriel's departure from Manchester United.
Premier League rules state: “During your child’s registration period, their registration may only be cancelled if everyone agrees." Everyone here refers to the club, the player, and the player's guardian.
The rules add, "If the parties don’t agree, then any person involved can also ask the Premier League to provide a binding decision on a termination request."
It seems that Gabriel's request to the club for termination — known as a "notice of intention" — has begun this process. Essentially, asking the club to agree to his departure. If they do not, they would likely then look to begin the termination process with the league.
It's hard to imagine United simply allowing Gabriel, a massive prospect with huge transfer value, to leave of his own accord for nothing. Unfortunately for the club, there are also strict rules about the transfer of underage players, and therefore it's not as simple as them finding a buyer for his contract — seeing as he does not have a professional deal at this point.
Can Man United stop J.J. Gabriel from leaving?
At least at the start of the process, Manchester United can prevent J.J. Gabriel from leaving the club by simply denying his request.
According to the report by The Telegraph, United feel as though the situation is salvageable at this point.
"It is understood that Gabriel is not in line to immediately join another club, but has decided he wants to leave United," Law writes. "It remains to be seen whether United refuse Gabriel’s request, but the club are not thought to see the situation as irretrievable yet and have not given up hope of rectifying it. United had planned to include the youngster in the first-team squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton."
However, as stated above in the Premier League regulations, if Gabriel submits a termination request to the league, and they step in to grant the request, then Man United could potentially be left powerless to see the teenager walk.
How good is J.J. Gabriel?
While evaluating the talent potential of a 15-year-old can be extremely difficult, J.J. Gabriel's trajectory can be summed up by the media referring to him as "Kid Messi." He earned the nickname after a YouTube video of him at 9 years old showing off incredible ball skills went viral.
Gabriel has been tabbed as a mega-prospect for years now, with promising skills in dribbling, goal scoring, and passing. He plays as an attacking midfielder, winger, and false nine.
According to Transfermarkt, during the 2025/26 season, Gabriel scored 23 goals in 23 U-18 Premier League matches, including two hat-tricks, and he already has two goals in two Premier League 2 games this season.
Who is J.J. Gabriel's father?
J.J. Gabriel's father is former Arsenal and Brighton defender Joe O'Cearuill.
The 39-year-old never made a senior appearance for the Gunners, but was contracted to the club in 2006 and 2007 before moving on loan to Brighton where he played for the Seagulls eight times. He represented Barnet, Boreham Wood, and Forest Green Rovers amongst many other sides before retiring in 2016. He made two international appearances for the Republic of Ireland, both coming in 2007 as a 20-year-old.
O'Cearuill has reportedly been involved in Gabriel's young career so far. According to an source cited by Samuel Luckhurst of The Sun, "The dad was a problem when the boy was six at West Ham."
The report in The Sun states that United have "bent over backwards" to placate O'Cearuill while Gabriel has been in the academy, but "it has not worked." Another report by Luckhurst in The Sun states that O'Cearuill has been "difficult to deal with" according to their "well-placed source."
What is J.J. Gabriel's nationality?
J.J. Gabriel was born in Enfield, England, a town just north of London.
Therefore, he is eligible to play for England by birth. He has been playing for the England youth national team, appearing for the U-15, U-16, and U-17 sides.
However, he's also eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland through his father, Joe O'Cearuill.
He is also eligible to play for Cyprus through his mother, and Trinidad and Tobago through his grandfather.
