US Open champion Zverev to play Davis Cup for Germany on the weekend

Freshly crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev will play for Germany in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Croatia, the team has said.

Zverev is due to arrive in Halle on Thursday for the tie set for Saturday and Sunday. The winner reaches the Davis Cup Finals set for late November in Italy.
"We are delighted that Alexander is coming to our home tie in Halle despite the physical strain after this extraordinary grand slam season and his US Open triumph," team captain Michael Kohlmann said late Tuesday.
"That is a great signal for our team and the German tennis fans."
Zverev won his second grand slam title of the year at the US Open on Sunday. He said afterwards he would love to play Davis Cup but that everyone in his entourage wanted him to get some rest instead.
Zverev was nominated for the tie last month, but Kohlmann said at the time that his participation could depend on how far he would go at the US Open.
After the Davis Cup, Zverev is also set to play at the September 25-27 Laver Cup tournament in London.
