Cam Skattebo is not backing away from the possibility of lining up across from Aaron Donald. The New York Giants running back knows exactly what could be waiting for him Monday night, especially in a short-yardage situation. Donald’s return gives the Los Angeles Rams another major piece up front, however, Skattebo sounds more excited than concerned about testing himself against one of the greatest defensive players of his generation.

The matchup also comes with a simple challenge for Skattebo. If the Giants need one yard and Donald is standing in the hole, there will be no avoiding him.

Cam Skattebo Ready To Meet Aaron Donald With New York Giants

As reported by NFL Rumors on September 18, Skattebo was asked about potentially facing Donald in Week 2. The Giants RB acknowledged the unusual circumstances surrounding Donald’s return; however, he made it clear that he expects the Rams star to be ready if he takes the field.

“If it is his first game, he’s got to be ready for it, just like we do. I’m excited to play against him…if I have to meet him in the hole on 3rd and 1, so be it. I gotta get one yard.” 

 

Donald came out of retirement in late August after playing during the 2023 season. He did not travel with the Rams for its Week 1 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia, instead continuing his preparation in Los Angeles. On Thursday, Donald practiced in full, and Rams head coach Sean McVay said he was hopeful the veteran defensive tackle would play against the Giants.

For Skattebo, that long layoff does not erase what Donald can still bring. He knows there could be some adjustment for the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, but the Giants are preparing for the challenge.

Skattebo’s confidence is backed by how he opened his season. He rushed 18 times for 81 yards and a touchdown in the Giants’ 28-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys. His physical running style was obvious throughout the game, and he averaged 3.5 yards after contact per carry.

That could make Monday night’s matchup especially interesting. The Giants want to establish the run, while the Rams allowed 174 rushing yards in their Week 1 loss to the 49ers. Los Angeles could get a major boost from Donald, but the Giants still have a reason to keep attacking the ground game.

There is also uncertainty around the rest of the Rams’ front. Myles Garrett is unavailable after landing on injured reserve following knee surgery, while Omar Speights and Nate Landman are both dealing with injuries and were listed as questionable in the supplied report.

That leaves Donald’s potential return as an even bigger storyline; however, Skattebo is not treating him like an untouchable figure. He repeatedly called Donald one of the best ever while making his own responsibility clear.
