The backlash has also reignited the long-running debate over the role Eddie Jones played in the Springboks’ 2007 World Cup success.
Jones, the Australian coach who is currently in charge of Japan, was part of White’s coaching staff during the tournament and has previously been credited with making a significant contribution to the campaign.
Former Springbok coach Nick Mallett famously described Jones’ appointment as a “masterstroke”, while several players from the 2007 squad have also spoken highly of his influence.
Fourie du Preez has previously suggested that the Springboks would not have won the World Cup without Jones’ contribution.

Jones’ reputation in South Africa was further enhanced when he masterminded Japan’s famous upset victory over the Springboks at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. His win over the All Blacks as England coach in 2019 semi-final is also another highlight.
